According to Delhi Police, five people were rescued and taken to nearby hospitals, while the death toll from the collapse rose to seven. Three of the five survivors are in critical condition, officials said.

The action followed a complaint by a taxi driver who alleged that the four officers brutally assaulted him after taking him into custody from his house on September 2 in connection with a case involving one of his friends.

The building, used as a PG accommodation for students, was around 40 to 50 years old and had a basement and five upper floors, Delhi Police said. Renovation work was allegedly being carried out on the ground floor when the structure collapsed. Earlier, police had said repair work was underway in the basement.
